Profile

Wasps academy hooker Alfie Barbeary started life as a centre but has since settled into his role in the front row.

A student at Bloxham School, Alfie started playing rugby at the age of six at Banbury, staying there until he was 14 when he joined the Wasps academy.

At school level, Alfie was a regular try threat, breaking the school’s first XV calendar-year record with 24 tries.

Alfie has captained a lot throughout his career, for Banbury, Bloxham and more recently Wasps U18s.

And his performances at school and academy level earned him a call-up to the England age groups, including scoring a fine try from a clever grubber kick when playing for England U16s against Wales – a highlight in his rugby career to date.

Alfie’s hopes of playing in the centres are also evident in his rugby heroes, having grown up idolising Manu Tuilagi but he is now firmly a part of the front row.

At club level, Alfie was part of the Banbury sides that won multiple Oxfordshire County Cups, while he credits Mark Horrocks, a coach at Banbury, and Tom Gray, a cousin and fellow Banbury player, for helping develop his game and particularly his footwork.

Alfie’s parents Nick and Denise were also invaluable to his rugby career in getting him to and from training and on annual tours.

Away from rugby, Alfie is a keen darts player and fan, while he also supports Arsenal in football.
