Profile

Matson, promoted to South-West One last season, have played a major developmental role in the career of Ciaran Knight, a Gloucester Academy prop, who played at the club from the age of seven to 17. Not only that – two cousins Shaun Knight, a prop and hooker Ryan Charles did so too. Shaun, now of Bath Rugby, was with Gloucester and Ryan has been on a dual registration with Cinderford and Gloucester.

Ciaran attended Robinswood Junior School and Brockworth Comprehensive, has been studying English, sport, gym instruction and sports coaching at St Peter’s High School and became a new member of Gloucester’s Senior Academy for 2016/17.

Gloucester born, he can play at No.8 as well as on either side of the front row and his best experience was winning the Triangular International Festival as a member of the England Counties U18 squad, under head coach Dave Reed, at Hartpury College in April 2016. It included a 7-5 win over France, which was England’s first victory in matches between the sides for nine years. He also scored a maiden try against France in his third game for England U18 in Cape Town last August, made his U20 debut against France at Exeter last February, played in every match in the Grand Slam season and in all five games in the World Championship that followed in June. Ciaran scored his first try at that level against Samoa.

Dan Cole, the Leicester and England prop, is his mentor and Ciaran’s aim is to win selection for the England Elite squad. He helped Matson to lift the Gloucestershire Cup when he was in the U13 to U17 age groups and he enjoys rugby above all other sports because of the friendship among team members.

His hobbies include watching football and Kieran Brookes, the Northampton Saints and England prop and Sonny Bill Williams, the All Black centre, are his favourite players. Kingsholm tops his list of grounds.
