Ethan Waddleton followed in the stud marks of his dad, Ian, by playing for Ipswich RFC when taking up the game at the age of eight. He later switched to Colchester, Northampton Saints Academy and last season to Saracens Academy before becoming a member of the England Sevens squad for 2015/16. Ethan made his debut in the HSBC World Series in Wellington at the end of January last year and also appeared in Sydney the following week.
His third and fourth tournaments were in Las Vegas and Vancouver in March 2016 before he scored a maiden try against Brazil in Paris in May. He has now appeared in 11 events. The most were in Dubai, Cape Town where he scored his second try, against Scotland in the Cup semi-final in December and Wellington this January, Sydney in February, together with Las Vegas and Vancouver in March. He also figured in the Hong Kong tournament this April but a shoulder injury ruled him out of the Singapore event the following weekend.
Ipswich born, he attended St Joseph’s College, captained the first XV and, while there, helped them to win the Rosslyn Park U16 title and the National Schools Festival. He has played cricket and rugby for Suffolk and his mum Karla figured in national hockey for Ipswich and the East of England.
His dream dinner party would involve Nelson Mandela, James Hunt and Will Smith and he loves seafood, especially sushi and meat fondue. Ethan’s guilty pleasures are shopping and eating a family bag of M&M’S. He has a Bernese Mountain dog called Lily.
