Brilliant Barnstaple effort named Try of the Month

A wonder try from Barnstaple RFC's Luke Berry has been chosen by Danielle Waterman as December's Try of the Month.

The try was scored during Barnstaple's 27-15 away win over Broadstreet in National Two South with Berry using his left foot to control a cross-field kick from his fly-half.

"It is absolutely unbelievable skill to control the ball over the try line with your foot," said Waterman. "But also for the number 10 to have the confidence to turn and make that cross-field kick."

Despite the praise Berry has received for the try, the 28-year-old says he got a bit lucky.

"It was all off-the-cuff, we noticed some space but unfortunately I didn't quite have the pace to catch the ball so I stuck a foot out and luckily it bounced up for me," says Berry who has been playing at Barnstaple since he was 11.

Berry has scored in every match since December and is hoping he can help his side rise up the table in National Two South.

"We're getting used to life in this league and hopefully we'll have a strong second half of the season."

Each month England Rugby celebrates the best grassroots tries scored across the country. Whether it is a team try through a dozen sets of hands, a rolling maul, or an individual bit of brilliance, we want you to send us your tries.

Entries for January's Try of the Month competition will close at midnight on Wednesday, 31 January.
