England Students select team to face Ireland

  • Team will play Ireland on Sunday in Oxford
  • Head coach Aaron James looking for his team to bring 'intensity'

England Students have revealed their side to host the Combined Universities of Ireland on Sunday, 2 April at Oxford University.

James and the management staff made the announcement to the team at their hotel in Oxford on Friday before training.

James said on the selection, “We’re quite lucky that through the selection process and the training this week, we’ve got lots of options to keep the intensity right across the eighty minutes.”

James told the team during the announcement that he viewed them as starters and finishers and that all 23 would play and “contribute to our performance.”

He added, “The Irish bring a lot of intensity. Going off of last year, they like to attack, they like to challenge us at the contact areas.  It will be a fairly intense eighty minutes and we’ll need our bench to come on and add a lot of impact and finish off the game for us.”

The squad have two more days of training before the game and James wants the team to make the most of it, again highlighting the intensity of the upcoming clash with Ireland.

Assistant coach Mark Irish added, “We’re just raising the intensity at practice to get the players at the level it’s going to be like on Sunday. We’re raising the pressure to make it as game-related as possible, and to test their accuracy under that pressure.”

England Students play the Combined Universities of Ireland on Sunday at Oxford University RFC on Iffley Road, with kick-off scheduled for 2:30.
