England Women talent development group named

  • 35 players selected for the upcoming season
  • Four players named in England Women U18 sevens squad

The England Women talent development group has named 35 players who have been selected for the upcoming 2017/18 season.

The talent development group (TDG) is an important part of the England Women's performance pathway which identifies and supports young emerging talent at U18 level in the women’s game.

Working closely with regional constituent bodies and junior academies from January to May, the RFU performance pathway team identifies players to take part in an intensive training camp where they are assessed not only by on-field performance but also on leadership, organisation and problem-solving skill and ability. From this camp, 35 players are selected to make up the TDG for the upcoming season.

TDG will run a series of contact days throughout the season to provide ongoing training and support for selected players. This year contact days will increase from 12 to 28 days across the season."This will be a great learning experience for all involved."

Four players in 2017/18 TDG have also been named in the England Women U18 sevens squad who will compete at the 2017 U18 sevens Rugby Europe Championship on September 16th and 17th in Vichy, France.

Cara Clarke (Worcester Valkyries), Charlotte Wright-Haley (Winscombe), Jess Weaver (Newark) and Lauren Fisher (Pullborough) will travel to Vichy ahead of this weekend’s tournament.

In addition, Ella Wyrwas (Saracens), Ellie Kildunne (Gloucester-Hartpury), Helena Rowland (Saracens), Pheobe Murray (Bristol Ladies) who were part of last season’s TDG have also been named.

Abi Burton (Castleford RFC), Amelia Harper (Harlequins Ladies), Cara Brincat (Worcester Valkyries),and Victoria Laflin (Worcester Valkyries) are also included in the squad.

Performance pathway officer and U18s sevens programme lead James Cooper, who will travel to France with the squad, said: “The opportunity to compete in high level competition, such as U18s Rugby Europe Championship, gives players invaluable playing experience and is an important part of a player’s development. This will be a great learning experience for all involved.”

England are drawn in Pool B alongside Wales, USA and Russia. This is the fourth year the tournament has run with 12 teams competing across the weekend. England will face Wales, Russia and USA, kicking off against Wales on Saturday at 10:06am BST.
