Guinness England Rugby legend Alex Corbisiero reflects on the Old Mutual Wealth Series clean sweep following the win over Samoa, how the new starters fared and assesses what can make Eddie Jones' side even better in 2018.
There are definitely positives to take from this game. England scored some good tries, we were more clinical at times but we also left a lot out there, so that’s why there will be a little bit of frustration.
There were a few handling errors and a few missed chances. We probably could have run away with it if we had been a little bit more clinical.
At moments in the game we drifted off and didn’t have full control, maybe not doing some of the basics that we need to do really well to really finish the game and put them to the sword.
We were very comfortable, never threatened, and probably never hit our full stride for long periods of that game.
Impressive new faces
I thought Sam Simmonds had a great game. For a first start in a very physical encounter against Samoa it’s very hard to get over the gainline and repeatedly carry to some of the biggest hitters in the game. "It was definitely beneficial to have seen these guys."
I thought he did that very well, and in defence I thought his work rate was good, his low tackles were very effective and even set up a few turnovers. He looked busy and not out of place in his first start.
It was great to see them [Lozowski and Slade] score and they had moments in the game when they were very good. Slade’s try had a fantastic finish, he also had a few nice breaks.
Lozowski as well, constantly putting himself about and getting through work. But at times we needed to control the game a bit more. On the whole it was definitely beneficial to have seen these guys and give them Test starts.
England looked comfortable through the whole series but we could still push on that little bit more, not forgetting the basics that we do so well.
Set piece is a great platform for us, but for me the next big step is controlling the game and making sure we play in the right areas and also really opening up teams and putting them to the sword.
With an extra 5% of accuracy in that game we would have scored another four or five tries. That’s got to be the goal for us – finishing off what we’re creating and just being that little bit sharper, especially in their 22.
Today was also about finding depth charts and giving guys opportunities to be in the mix for 2019 and making sure we’re not relying on one or two players.
You can’t discredit Samoa today. That was a very good England side. "Credit to the passion they played with."
Maybe they weren’t the best we’ve ever seen them but at the same time they dug in there. Defensively they were solid at times and turned over a lot of ball at the breakdown, and they carried well.
They’re a good team. When they get in the right areas of the field they have so many ball carriers in the team that they can be hard to stop. Credit to them, credit to the passion they played with.
They didn’t give up in that game ever - it was a very good Test match.
