- Wasps win dramatic final at Ricoh Arena
- Christian Wade scores in grand final
England Saxons winger Christian Wade helped Wasps lift the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series trophy on home soil following a 31-28 win over Exeter Chiefs at the Ricoh Arena.
Wasps beat Harlequins and the Ospreys on the way to the final and it was Tom Cruse’s late try that proved decisive in an exciting nine-try thriller.
Guy Thompson and Frank Halai got Wasps off to a brilliant start, but Max Bodilly’s first half brace brought the Chiefs back into the game before the interval.
Wasps flier Tom Howe then crossed to give the home side the advantage but Chiefs skipper Sam SImmonds hit back immediately.
Wade continued the scoring spree showcasing his deadly pace to beat three players and dot down under the posts and after Bodilly had completed his hat-trick, it was Cruse who grabbed the decisive try.
The hosts also snatched a dramatic victory in the quarter-finals beating Harlequins 24-19. Quins and England 7s player Cameron Cowell’s successful conversion 20 seconds from time put the visitors ahead, but Howe’s last-minute try delighted a raucous Ricoh Arena.
Sale Sharks’ Tom and Ben Curry both scored in their opening win against Cardiff Blues before flying out to South Africa with the England Under 18 squad and England Sevens youngsters Cowell and Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas also both dotted down for Quins earlier in the day.
