The search for the country's best sevens sides continues this weekend as the second of four regional play-off competitions takes place at Hazelwood, the home of London Irish RFC.

Men's and women's teams who have qualified from across the region will all be competing for a place in the Secure Trading 24/Sevens Series national final at the Rec on Saturday, 29 July.

Midlands teams progress

Last week saw the first of the regional play-offs at Worcester's Sixways Stadium where Northern Lights took home the women's trophy, beating Harwich & Dovercourt in the final.

"It's really exciting," said Ruth Nash, Northern Light's captain. "We reached the final last year and so we can't wat to go back again."

"Our ambition is to play rugby together and hopefully try and win some tournaments."

In the men's competition the Honey Badgers overcame Birmingham Bees in the final and both teams will now progress to the finals in Bath.

Seventy7s aiming to defend title

This weekend's action at Hazelwood will see reigning national champions Seventy7s attempt to reach the national finals once again.

The team, made up of four sets of brothers and named after London's number 77 bus which they used to travel on to school, took the tournament by storm last year but captain Harry Whiteley says repeating the feat will be twice as hard.

"We know this year is going to be extremely tough even to get to the final. There will be a lot of new teams entering who want to be national champions but we are hoping that having the same players will be a big advantage."
