Thomas Hardye in comfortable U15 Vase victory

  • Thomas Hardye win U15 Vase in NatWest Schools Cup
  • Hardye beat Dr Challoner's 62-7
  • Orlando Bailey named Man of the Match

Thomas Hardye cruised to a comfortable win in the NatWest Schools Cup U15 Vase final, beating Dr Challoner's 62-7.

And an all-round excellent team performance marked Thomas Hardye’s victory by 10 tries to one.

The Dorchester school, unbeaten this season, controlled the contest from the start to collect their first trophy in this national event.

It was one-way traffic in the first half in which Hardye’s scored seven tries to be 45-0 ahead at the interval.

Dr Challoner’s, who won this competition last season, were unhinged by a team inspired by the all-round skills of fly half Orlando Bailey who also scored a try himself and landed five conversions.

Some of the linking play was outstanding and Bailey’s assured performance also brought the best out of his colleagues in captain John Stewart at No 8 and the running skills of centres Frankie Read and Freddie Marsden.

To the credit of Dr Challoner’s they responded in the second half to register a try through centre Ainle McGuinn.

Bailey’s chip ahead in the fourth minute opened the floodgates as it bounced wickedly in the in-goal area giving Marsden the opportunity to get the crucial touch.

Two minutes late it was an exchange of passes between Bailey and Read which led to the centre scoring the second.
And Marsden scored the third by racing onto a pass from Read. It was not all about the backs though.

Prop Reece Vincent scored the fourth before Bailey raced away for the fifth. To finish the half there were further scores from substitute Will Simpson and wing Yihan Kershaw.

Dr Challoner’s showed their mettle at the start of the second half when McGuinn scored after they had been originally held up over the Hardye line.

However, Hardye’s had the last word in a far less hectic half by scoring three further tries through Read, who added the conversion, captain Stewart and, finally, substitute Jack Adams-Spencer.
