- 16-year-old Luke Cooper effort wins Samsung Try of the Season
- The Billingham centre's try won a public vote
A superb solo try from Billingham U16s centre Luke Cooper has been named the Samsung Try of the Season after winning a public vote.
Cooper's try was one of eight Samsung Try of the Month winners contending for the end of season award with entries ranging from Tynedale to Redruth.
For winning Samsung Try of the Season, Luke Cooper and Billingham have won themselves an exclusive event at their club courtesy of Samsung and England Rugby, hosted by Ugo Monye and including a training session with two of the England Rugby senior coaches.
Cooper's try for Billingham in a match against Middlesborough, in which he beat seven defenders to touch down, was chosen as Samsung Try of the Month in October by England's Joe Launchbury.
Harlequins and England legend Ugo Monye said of Cooper's try at the time, "There is some incredible footwork, he just dances through. It’s a try that displays everything that is good about our game.”
‘I couldn’t believe it’
The skill Cooper showed to carve his way through is even more impressive considering he only took up the sport at the age of 13.
"I was at school and they were looking for players so they asked for the two fastest pupils and I was won of them,” says Cooper.
"I then went along to the club and haven't looked back since. They've been really welcoming and I've loved it. I couldn't believe it when I won Samsung Try of the Month so to win this is incredible."
Cooper says he bases his game on England and British & Irish Lions winger Anthony Watson. “Watson has great speed and skills so I’ve worked hard on my sidestep to become a better player," said Cooper.
“It’s a great feeling to score tries like that but it was my team who gave me the opportunity to do it.”
