- Bibby ready for first run out of the season
- We want to improve on last year – Bibby
Lancashire-born Dan Bibby has more reason than most to be excited about this weekend’s European Sevens Grand Prix Series leg in Manchester. With four weeks of pre-season under the belt it’s a chance to remove the shackles in front of his friends and family.
Fly half Bibby, 23, scored 15 tries during the 2013-14 IRB World Series and says that this weekend provides the perfect tonic to kick-start another long campaign.
“I haven’t played up north too much over recent years, but it’s great to head back to sunny Manchester and hopefully catch up with a few familiar faces.
“We had a few weeks off after the Commonwealth Games, but we’ve been back in camp for a while now and the lads are raring to go. Pre-season is always tough but we want to improve on last year and the only way that will happen is with hard work.”
While football is the dominant sport in Lancashire, Bibby is grateful that he picked up the oval ball from an early age.
“I think I found the only rugby union club in the whole of Wigan! There’s plenty of rugby league and of course football going on, but I went to my local club at five. My dad took over as one of the coaches and that really drove me on.
“The sevens this weekend is a great opportunity for fans to watch some entertaining rugby. We’re keen to showcase the game and it would be great to see some full stands. There are some new guys involved and it’ll be good to see how they get on ahead of the first World Series leg in October.”
