- 24 players selected from counties across the country
- The team will play France U18 Poles Espoirs followed by Ireland U18 Clubs
John Porter-Griffiths, team manager of England Counties U18s, has confirmed the 24 players selected to take part in this year’s fixtures against France U18 Poles Espoirs and Ireland U18 Clubs.
The players were selected following divisional trial matches in February when representative sides from London South East played against South West and a team from the North took on the Midlands.
The squad will meet for two further training weekends in March where they will play warm up matches against Leicester Academy and train with Northampton Saints Academy before their first international fixture against France on Wednesday, 30 March.
This year’s friendly ‘Tri Nations’ U18 series is hosted in Dublin with each team playing each other once. Both of England’s matches will be played at Ashbourne RFC with their second match against Ireland to take place on Saturday, 2 April.
“We’re really pleased with the group of players we have this year who we know will be very competitive during the tour in Ireland,” said Porter-Griffiths. “Training with the Leicester and Northampton academy teams will be fantastic for our players and give them a taste of rugby at a higher level, which in turn will ensure they are primed for our first match.”
England won both fixtures when they hosted the series last year but Porter-Griffiths said developing the players is more important than the results. “ All players play to win, however our ultimately aim is development these young men to achieve the best that they can.”
“A number of these players will go on to achieve great things in their rugby careers like so many have done before them. There is no higher honour than representing your country and you can see just how much it means to the players.”
