England Women Sevens were beaten 0-27 by Ireland in their final pool game at the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series in Kazan, Russia.
After starting their tournament with a 17-17 draw against Italy, England lost 14-24 to Poland before Ireland ran in five tries in their victory.
England will now face Portugal in their first game of day two in the Challenge Trophy semi-finals.
Day one finale
Ireland were ahead inside a minute as Claire Boles went over down the left wing, with Aoife Doyle powering over for their second shortly after.
England rallied in attack but could not breakdown a well marshalled Irish defence before Megan Burns added a third for a 0-17 lead at half-time.
Hannah Tyrrell got Ireland's third after some phases from a close range scrum before Burns hit a good line to score her second.
James Bailey's side enjoyed possession in the closing stages but were unable to get on the scoreboard.
It was Natalia Pamieta who got the first score of England's second match, when the Poland wing went around the outside on the left to cross.
Some England pressure saw both Abi Burton and Celia Quansah go close to scoring, before Quansah finally got England's first points following some quick hands from right to left as she raced in as it sat 7-7 after seven minutes.
Poland responded with some clever offloading play before a burst of pace from Anna Klichowska got their second try, and another offload out of a tackle set Katarzyna Paszczyk for a third.
Paszczyk's mazy run through the defence eventually saw her grab her second, but with time dead England would have the last say as a brilliant injection of speed down the wing and step inside from her own half saw Garnet Mackinder dot down under the posts.
Despite having possession of the ball for the opening minute, England conceded first when Michela Sillari spotted a gap in the defence and darted in from a few metres out.
England were level after a strong hand off from Celia Quansah gave her the space to run into from inside her own half and dot down, as Helena Rowland added the extras.
With half-time approaching, Italy turned over possession and Sofia Stefan raced in as they led 7-12 at the break.
It was another try from deep that allowed Michela Sillari to extend the Azzurri's lead, before a superb step and break by Rowland reduced the deficit.
Some neat attacking phase play by England saw Lizzie Adam brought down a few metres from the line, but Emma Uren crossed from the next phase to tie the game up at 17-17 with a minute to play, but neither side was able to find a winning score.
