A Wasps’ recruit from Cardiff Blues for 2013/14, Reigate-born Jake Cooper-Woolley made his England Saxons’ debut off the bench in the 18-9 win over Ireland Wolfhounds in Cork in January last year. He had also played for Welsh Premiership side Bedwas but featured at youth level for Harlequins while at school after being with Dorking minis. His 50th Premiership appearance was against Exeter Chiefs in late May this year.
When Jake signed for Wasps, David ‘Dai’ Young, the Wasps director of rugby, said: “I saw Jake playing at Cardiff University and was very impressed. He has a strong physical presence and has played on both sides of the scrum.” Dai, a shrewd assessor of front row talent, propped 51 times for Wales and in three Tests for the British & Irish Lions.
With a strong physical presence, Jake was a try-scorer when leading Cardiff University to a 33-13 victory over Swansea in the 2012 Welsh Varsity Match at the Millennium Stadium. He competed in the England Schools Championships at shot putt and won the young player of the year award at Wasps in 2014. His second Saxons appearance was off the bench for Kieran Brookes after 51 minutes in the match against South Africa A at Bloemfontein this June.
