After eight seasons with Topsham RFC, Sam Skinner switched to Taunton Titans before joining Exeter Chiefs in 2014 and becoming captain of Exeter Braves in the A League. His senior debut was against Gloucester in the LV= Cup that November. Way back, Peter, his father, took him at the age of five to his initial training session at Bonfire Field, Topsham, his favourite ground.
Sam was educated at Kenn C of E Primary School and Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, where he captained the first XV. Looking back, he was a centre and fly half for Topsham and No. 8 at school. He said: “I enjoyed playing in various positions and seeing the game from different angles.”
He studied English, economics and biology at school and is now taking a BA in Business Studies at Exeter University. Sam plays cricket for Ide, enjoys squash and has produced some stand-out displays for the Braves in the A League. Sam added: “Training full-time with the first team squad, I’m learning all the time and it’s something that I’ve been able to take into the academy games.” His first England U20 cap was off the bench after 52 minutes for Will Owen against Italy at Plymouth last February and he scored tries against Japan and Wales in the 2015 World Championship.
