Old Richians on the yellow brick road
Can a rugby club put on a pantomime? Oh yes they can!
Old Richian RFC’s fundraising committee gathered a team of drama queens and, with panto directors Lisa Moulder and Sarah Lloyd rewriting the classic Wizard of Oz, put on a winning pantomime.
They kept the much loved original characters but added a local rugby twist to delight a family audience which had already enjoyed last year’s rendition of Cinderella.
They wanted to bring a different kind of fun into the clubhouse, raise money for youth teams and club developments, and encourage the local community and all age groups from youth to vets to get involved.
The entire club pitched in, building the stage, making all the props, selling treats on the night, and painting a yellow brick road right up to the entrance. And they have had brilliant feedback while raising over £1,500 to put straight into the club.
The innovative fundraising committee run events throughout the year with the whole community very much welcome. The upcoming events include: a Children’s Easter Egg hunt on 9th April, Rock out at Richians Music Festival on 10th June, Sounds of Ibiza Festival featuring Marcus Allen on 2nd September and a Pub Quiz on second Friday of every month, as well as their annual Halloween Disco and Christmas Party.
And whenever the club is looking for funding, you can bet everyone will shout – they’re behind you!
