Romsey RFC leads Rugby 4 MND campaign to support Motor Neurone Disease awareness

Romsey RFC recently ran a Rugby 4 MND initiative, raising funds and awareness for motor neurone disease (MND).

The campaign ran from 14 to 22 June and brought together rugby clubs and supporters across Hampshire and beyond.

It was inspired by Romsey RFC’s Nick Smith, a long-serving club member who is living with MND.

Originally from Yorkshire, Nick has been part of the Romsey community for more than 30 years. He played an important role in developing the club’s facilities and remains a valued presence at the club.

Tristan Pattison, Chair of Romsey RFC, said: “What started as a small idea to show support for Nick turned into something far more impactful. The response from the wider rugby community has been incredible.”

Participants were invited to take on a physical challenge of their choice, with events ranging from local walks to bike rides in France.

As part of the fundraising efforts, Pattison and a friend travelled to all 34 Hampshire rugby clubs on the mainland and the Isle of Wight in a single day, with the Isle of Wight festival adding a logistical challenge to the journey.

The fundraising efforts coincide with Global MND Awareness Day, which was on Saturday 21 June. The summer solstice is the chosen date to symbolise light, strength, and the resilience of the global MND community.

So far, the campaign has raised nearly £7,000, with donations still coming in.

“There is a real power in rugby communities working together,” said Pattison. “We hope this will continue to grow and that other clubs will run with their own fundraising initiatives for MND.”
