Summer tour preview: USA v England

England travel to Washington D.C., where they will face the USA at Audi Field on Saturday 19 July at 22:05 BST, with the game being shown live on the England Rugby YouTube channel.

Steve Borthwick’s side are coming off the back of an impressive series win over Argentina after defeating Los Pumas 12-35 and 17-22

A defensive masterclass in the first Test, followed by a last-minute Jack van Poortvliet try in the second saw England complete a clean sweep in South America.

They last faced the USA in 2021, winning 43-29 as debuts were handed to the likes of Marcus Smith, Harry Randall and Joe Heyes, and England have never lost to the Men’s Eagles across their seven encounters.

Freddie Steward made his debut against the USA.

It is just the second time England will play the USA on American soil, having last toured the country in 2001 with Kyran Bracken captaining the side.

The USA head into the fixture after beating Belgium but losing to Spain in their two summer fixtures so far.

Just five hours before the Senior Men kick off, England U20 will face Australia in their fifth-place play-off final in the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship.

England U20 beat Australia in their final pool game thanks to a late Ben Coen effort, and the rematch is available to watch live and for free on RugbyPass TV

Keep your eye on

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso’s return. The Exeter Chiefs wing returned from a long-term injury against France XV, but a red card saw him banned for the two Tests against Argentina. However, Borthwick still wanted him to tour and Feyi-Waboso could make his return against the USA.

All-action Seb Atkinson. Gloucester Rugby centre Atkinson has enjoyed a stellar start to international rugby and scored his first try for England in the second Test against Argentina. He has also impressed with his carrying and defensive ability and at just 23 has time on his side.

The hooker position. Following Jamie George’s call up to The British & Irish Lions squad and Theo Dan’s injury against Argentina, there is a vacancy to be filled at hooker. Curtis Langdon, who made his England debut against the USA, replaced Dan during the match, while Gabriel Oghre and Jamie Blamire have been added to the squad.

Potential debutants. England’s last game against the USA yielded 12 debutants, including Langdon, Blamire, Ben Curry, Freddie Steward and Trevor Davison, all of whom are in the squad this year. With four players already making their debuts this tour, a further seven could win their first caps in Washington
