Tribute paid to two much-loved Bicester rugby players after fatal fire
Bicester Rugby Club has paid tribute to two treasured players who were killed in a fire at a former RAF base earlier this week.
Firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, were both heavily involved with the Bicester club, playing a key role in the women’s side, the Bicester Vixens.
The club is raising funds in their memory and has nearly reached its £20,000 target.
Jennie joined the Vixens in November 2021, having never played rugby before.
Paul Jaggers, Chair for Bicester RUFC, said: “From the off, she showed such grit and determination. She was a ferocious No. 8, who always wanted to be the best player she could be.
“And off the pitch, she was a kind, loving, and wonderful human being.”
Martyn was a member of the club for over 20 years and was described as a “true rugby man.”
Jaggers said: “He always played with a smile and had an infectious smile that lit up a room. He was always willing to pull on an opposition shirt if they were short of numbers. He just loved the game.”
After hanging up his playing boots, Martyn used his firefighting knowledge to serve as First Aider for the Vixens.
The club will carry their memories in our hearts into every game, training, social and every day.
Bicester have launched a fundraiser to support The Fire Fighters Charity and has been overwhelmed by the response from the rugby community and beyond.
Jaggers added: “We’ve seen an outpouring of support from rugby clubs across the country and locally.
“With other local clubs, we’re arch-rivals on the pitch and we wind each other up. But when something like this happens, it’s all forgotten, and the rugby family pulls together.”
